How to Travel to the Rio Olympics Cheap

The Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is an unusually spectacular event. It will take place in August, and according to various estimates this year, more than 500 thousand tourists from different countries will visit it. In order to save money, many city guests choose inexpensive hostels located in more than a thousand slums. Take a walk through some of them and see what they are like.

As a rule, travelers settling here consider slums to be a rather dangerous area where gangs and drug dealers reign, but after living there for a while, they realize that it is much better here than they could imagine.

However, one should not relax. According to statistics, Brazil recorded the largest number of deaths from gunshot wounds, and most often this happens in slums.

The government made an attempt to launch a special program to pacify gangs in those slums that are close to rich areas or Olympic venues, but it’s difficult to talk about the results of their work.

Slum hostel prices are much lower than hotel prices. So, for example, in the hostel Favelinha, a room with a double bed will cost about $ 30, while in the neighboring three-star hotels - $ 250.

However, hostels are far from always boasting spectacular views.

Hostel Mirante do Arvrão offers higher-class rooms with a large bed, sea views, a terrace and panoramic windows.

For comparison, this number already looks a lot easier.
