House over the waterfall

This mansion is called the Falling Water Villa. And the villa is about to celebrate its eightieth birthday.

The house was built in 1936-1939 according to the project of the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and until 1960 was used as a country house of the millionaire Edgar Kaufman.

Now this mansion can be visited by everyone, and annually it receives up to 150 thousand visitors. True, for this you need to come to the state of Pennsylvania. The villa is located 80 kilometers from Pittsburgh.

How to build a villa

The history of building a house began with the acquaintance of F.L. Wright with his son E. Kaufman, who decided to take up architecture. Kaufman Jr. attended the architect's studio and made friends with Frank. It is for this reason that Wright was chosen as the designer of the Kaufman country house.

For construction, a picturesque place called "Bear Stream" was chosen. There was a rocky ledge that towered over the neighborhood, and nearby was a small waterfall. Wright made a bold move, telling the owners that he wants them to live with a waterfall, and not just look at it. And therefore, a pond is not just an adjacent territory, this is a structural part of the house.

Reinforced concrete was used for the construction, as well as stones that were brought from the local old stone quarry.

Wright received 8 thousand dollars for the project, the construction itself with the whole territory cost 155 thousand dollars. Given inflation, the estimated cost of the villa today is $ 2.4 million. However, this amount is not entirely correct, since in 2002 the house was restored, spending almost eleven and a half million on it.

Fame

The villa is beautiful in that it is organically integrated into the surrounding nature, as if inseparable from it. Stone walls and exterior decor - all this seems to complement the landscape.

Even the floor of the mansion is combined with the ledge of the rock on which it stands. Of course, the floor was polished, but the hearth in the house was surrounded by boulders that had been lying there for decades, and they were not subjected to any treatment.

Glasses are installed directly in the masonry, so it seems that the house grew out of rock.

And, of course, there is a descent to the stream.

In 1966, the "House over the Waterfall" received the status of the US National Historic Site. According to estimates for 2008, it was visited by about 6 million people. Including here Albert Einstein, Marlene Dietrich, William Hurst, Ingrid Bergman and even Franklin Roosevelt visited. In honor of the latter, a firework was arranged right above the waterfall.
